A New Sense of Change Echoes Across Bastar as Rehabilitated Youth Show Great Enthusiasm for Heritage Marathon
Raipur // Deep in Bastar’s forested belt, where history lingers in ancient groves and tribal traditions remain vividly alive, a distinctive sporting event is set to unfold. On March 22, 2026, the Bastar Heritage Marathon will bring together runners from across the country, offering not only a test of endurance but also a rare immersion into one of India’s most culturally rich and ecologically diverse regions.
The marathon will begin at the historic Lalbagh Ground in Jagdalpur and conclude at the famed Chitrakote Waterfall, often described as the “Niagara of Asia.” The 42-kilometre route will take participants through dense sal forests, quiet hamlets, and undulating terrain, capturing the essence of Bastar’s landscape at every step.
The event has been structured to welcome runners of varying abilities, with categories spanning 42 km (full marathon), 21 km (half marathon), 10 km, and a 5 km fun run. A total prize purse of ₹25 lakh has been announced, alongside dedicated awards for participants from the Bastar division. To ensure wider local participation, registration has been made free for all runners from the Bastar district.
Beyond its athletic appeal, the marathon carries a deeper narrative. In a region once marked by insurgency, a notable number of participants will include rehabilitated former Maoists. Many of these individuals, who had once retreated into the dense forests, are now stepping into the public sphere with renewed purpose. Their participation reflects a broader transition underway in Bastar, one that seeks to replace conflict with opportunity.
This transformation has been supported by targeted rehabilitation initiatives such as the “Lon Varratu” (Come Back Home) campaign in Dantewada and the “Poona Margam” programme, which translates to “Rehabilitation to Rejuvenation.” These efforts have enabled dozens of former insurgents to reintegrate into mainstream society, offering them not only livelihood opportunities but also a renewed sense of dignity.
Training sessions underway in local grounds present a compelling picture. Participants, many of whom are new to organised sport, are undergoing structured coaching under experienced trainers. Observers note their strength and natural stamina, qualities now being refined through modern running techniques. For several women participants, the shift has been especially significant. Moving away from environments marked by fear, they now speak of a growing sense of safety and social acceptance.
The marathon, therefore, is not merely a sporting event. It represents an avenue for personal transformation and social reintegration. For many participants, it is also a first step toward exploring athletics as a viable career path.
More than 200 rehabilitated cadres from seven districts—Sukma, Narayanpur, Bijapur, Dantewada, Bastar, Kanker, and Kondagaon—are expected to take part, alongside professional athletes, students, and local residents. Their collective presence is likely to lend the event both scale and symbolic weight.
At a broader level, the Bastar Heritage Marathon seeks to reposition the region’s identity. By combining sport with cultural and ecological tourism, the initiative aims to present Bastar as a destination defined not by its past conflicts, but by its heritage, spirit, and emerging opportunities.
Registrations for the event are open through the official website www.bastarheritage.run, and assistance is available via the designated helpline 92440-79533. On March 22, when footsteps echo along forest trails and converge at the waterfall’s edge, they will carry with them a message that extends well beyond sport: that with direction and opportunity, even regions long associated with unrest can stride toward a more hopeful future.
